The Nomad Gallery is committed to build solidarity through
activities related to the appreciation of Art and Culture, development of
indigenous Crafts, equal rights by seeking an end to discriminatory laws that
violate human rights or foster social injustice, and assist members of the
community through our programme, Art for Social Change', to create awareness on
gender sensitivities with a focus on women and youth. All areas of our work,
from diverse platforms, converge to seek a just social order with a vision of a
progressive Pakistan where equal opportunities must exist for all citizens. From
its inception in 1984 (as Interiors Gallery), Nomad Gallery is an art gallery
dedicated to the appreciation of art from all cultures.
The promotion of Art has been a highly satisfying journey where space and
freedom has been created for artists of merit and their creative endeavours have
evolved in a personal context, highlighted by creating awareness, appreciation
and through critique keeping in view aesthetics and the diversity of their work.
Over the years, works of emerging and renowned artists, national and
international, have been successfully exhibited at the gallery, while some were
supported by workshops when artists have generously shared their skills and
diverse styles interpreted in a personal context. The Nomad Gallery has also
created special linkages and regularly organises exhibitions of works from
around the region - reputed artists from the USA, Canada, India, France, EU
countries, Australia, Turkey, Japan, Bangladesh and Greece have exhibited with
us over the years and we are scheduling more international exhibitions in the
future. Nomad also offers Art and Music classes and workshops for persons of all
age groups.
Crafts are a precious heritage of this land and its people. We work with crafts
persons from across the country, individuals as well as at a community level and
with non-governmental organisations, to assist them in design, development and
quality control to preserve indigenous crafts, as well as by providing them a
marketing platform. At Nomad's Crafts section, the "Best of Pakistan" is
highlighted through representative crafts from all Provinces.
Our efforts towards promoting
awareness of issues related to Human Rights, Women's Rights and gender-based
violence in our society led us to initiate the Film Festival on Human Rights,
special events linked with the UN Human Rights Day, the Pakistani Women's Day
and the International Women's Day, which have now become Annual
events.
In the face of the many challenges and hurdles we experienced in our march
towards our goals, the continuing support and encouragement of progressive
individuals and organisations that partnered us on various programmes and events
has been invaluable. My team members at Nomad and I would like to express our
thanks and to hope that we may step into the future knowing that this support
remains with us, for it is this collective strength that keeps the intensity of
our commitment alive - the whole expression more defined.
In peace,
Nageen
